As “Stop Killing Games” and the topic of game preservation have become more relevant in modern gaming discourse, many have taken to the talking points discussed with such issues and begun passionately supporting them. This is a great thing for those who want to see classic titles avoid disappearing, despite how difficult game publishers and trade associations have tried to make game preservation. Unfortunately, some have used the topic of game preservation to push other agendas or goals, as seen with Milan Uhrík ranting in European Parliament, stating, “One thing that is definitely destroying videogames is the crazy, woke ideology and political correctness which is being forced into the games”, citing Yasuke from Assassin’s Creed Shadows during what was supposed to be plenary debate on the Stop Killing Games initiative, to which Stop Killing Games director general Moritz Katzner responded that Uhrík was “was supportive in tone, but in my view somewhat missed the point”.
Now another incident has sprung up where people are attaching themselves to the movement for game preservation to further advance some other goal, with the latest Grand Theft Auto VI leakers, Cyberleek, exploiting the opportunity to promote their own cybercurrency, while condemning Take-Two in their manifesto for the lack of physical discs as their main reason, stating, “No physical discs? Then more leeks!”. Given the overlap in Stop Killing Game’s goals, as well as the stated goals of Cyberleek, they decided to respond recently, condemning the hackers and distancing themselves from their operations. In their manifesto, Cyberleek would go on to criticize digital pre-orders and single-player games becoming unplayable after support ends. Stop Killing Games would make a post on X addressing the leaks, stating that, “Using illegal means to make a point is unacceptable to us and does nothing to protect our right to keep using what we paid for. No matter how strongly you disagree with the decisions of upper management at these companies, there are still thousands of developers who worked hard on this project — and they’re the ones being hit the hardest”.
A statement on the current GTA 6 Footage leak situation
Footage from GTA 6 has leaked, and a group of hackers, whom we will deliberately not name here, to avoid giving them further attention, claims responsibility. The footage itself appears to be genuine: Take-Two has already… pic.twitter.com/0rxQFXpdV2

Notably, they told supporters of their initiative to not send the leakers any money or buy into their cryptocurrency, stating, “The group is using the leak to promote a memecoin, attaching crypto links and QR codes to the footage and asking people to pay for more”. Regardless of whether you agree with Stop Killing Games’ emphasis on “constructive” and legal ways of supporting game preservation, it can certainly be said that it is highly suspect that this leak is being used to promote a digital currency and that leakers are asking for more money for more leaks. It doesn’t appear to be in the actual interest of game preservation, rather utilizing the movement’s language for their own gain.
