The Watcher, a new indie game by Yesterday’s Sandwich has just been announced. The upcoming game centers around a professional watcher. The game’s recently set up Steam page gives this description: “You are an unknown observer watching the residents of an apartment building across the street, in the strange city of Z, part of the totalitarian State of Nodia. But who’s really watching whom?” The Official Game Announcement Trailer builds on the Steam description’s cliffhanger by showing what the Watcher’s job entails and how dangerous the job turns out to be.
The trailer starts with a montage view of a huge building, a computer showing a man trying to stab a woman on the screen and soldiers breaking down doors, helicopters crashing windows, the playable character hiding under a bed while soldiers walk around in his apartment before the screen glitches. The playable character wakes up on the couch in his apartment then heads to a room full of computers, film tapes, IBM type computers, notes all over and more. He heads to a glitching old computer, with a mic next to it, he’s talking to what might be his boss, as he starts watching the surveillance footage of a woman drinking what might be coffee, when a man comes out of no-where and tried to stab her, and the computer screen goes out. He manages to hit the computer enough to start and the woman appears on it again, normal, as if nothing has happened.
The trailer unravels from there, starting with a delivery of new computer and monitoring “equipment,” which he hauls back and adds all of them to the first computer he’s working with. As he does so, his boss tells him he has “more objectives” to watch, and a montage shows other people in the apartment, a guy on a phone, a lady getting choked by a man in a coat, then the man in the coat looking straight at the camera with binoculars. The player takes pictures of characters’ actions, fills an “evidence board,” and speculates on what’s happening.
Next, another package arrives at the door, and it’s a walkie talkie. From it, a new individual speaks, she tells the player that “They’re watching you,” as the player then uses a machine to uncover a hidden camera or recorder behind his clock. The player pulls down a shelf unveiling a vent, as the voice says “They know your every move.” Inside the vent, a man in a lab coat (who might be the players’ boss) is being threatened by the same guy in a coat. The player connects to a port and all his computers show the player themself in real time as he raises his hand and waves. The trailer shows the first woman he watched in the building, drawn on a board, then in a video on the Computer stroking a knife.
A new delivery comes, a guitar case, inside it is a gun. The apartment building lights flicker out a “Help” as the player is asked “Is she worth it?” As the woman is held by a man at knife point. The beginning of the trailer repeats again, with the helicopter breaking the window, and men walking around. However, his door gets broken down by two soldiers, while he’s holding a tape, one shoots at him and he runs to escape jumping out of the window and the trailer ends. Not without noting that the Watcher is available to add to your Wishlist.
