A new survival horror game is being developed and self-published by Odyssey Cocktail, a team dedicated to create games that combine a mix of concepts that already work with other elements. A term they are labeling as a cocktail game and their newest brew is Susuki Kaidan.
It is a singleplayer game set in 1584 Sengoku-era Japan, where a civil war is tearing the country apart. The main protagonist is Saburo, a long survivor that is trying to cross through a susuki grass field to reach the city of Kyoto. Players must traverse through misty torii gates and and endless field to reach safety and they are not along.
The field is protected by the White Ghost, who will roam the field and threaten the cut the player’s journey to the city short. Players will also encounter other yokai lingering within the grass, putting their survival skills to the test. Susuki Kaidan draws on rural folklore, kaidan traditions, and psychological isolation to create a sense of fear and unease.
Odyssey Cocktail posted their announcement trailer back on July 29th, showcasing a stylistic black and white lens. The trailer includes clips from real gameplay footage, teasing what players can expect when stepping into this terrifying adventure. The White Ghost is also presented in the trailer, fitting the description of Japanese folklore.
She is depicted with long black hair, wearing a traditional white burial kimono. The White Ghost floats ominously, nearing the player as they try to navigate through the tall susuki grass. An armored yokai with glowing white eyes is also seen approaching the player, revealing that there are various enemies sure to keep the player on their guard.
Susuki Kaidan is set to come out sometime within the fourth quarter of 2027. A small wishlist video was also posted on Odyssey Cocktail’s YouTube channel earlier this morning, so prospective players should head on over to Steam and hit that wishlist button.
