
A recent GameSight analysis may change how publishers evaluate influencer marketing for competitive multiplayer games by challenging one of the industry’s most common launch metrics. The report suggests that the number of unique creators covering a PvP FPS shortly after launch is a stronger predictor of a game’s long-term success than peak viewer counts on streaming platforms. This represents a departure from the conventional view that high streaming audiences are the strongest indicator of long-term success.
GameSight studied the launch of 25 PvP FPS games. According to their findings, games that attracted a broad base of creators shortly after launch consistently performed better over time than games that generated large, but concentrated, viewer audiences. This suggests that attracting a broad range of creators is better at predicating a game’s long-term health than one or two massive creators. The analysis also examined sustained engagement, player retention, and long-term performance rather than relying solely on launch-day popularity. This distinction is important because many multiplayer games experience steep player declines shortly after launch. The analysis also involved was the comparison of shooter subgenres. According to the findings, more traditional PvP FPS shooters were better at retaining players when compared to extraction shooters, co-op shooters, looter shooters, and open-world shooters. Researchers measured this by tracking how long it took for the game’s daily engagement to fall below half of its Week 1 levels.
This study also has interesting implications about game longevity and the success it sees on streaming and social media platforms. Instead of looking for the number of viewers a game receives on streaming platforms, it may be more useful for developers and publishers to take note of the number of content creators covering a game. Peak viewership can also be influenced by factors such as sponsored streams, which cause spikes in viewership for a particular game. Given the industry’s longstanding emphasis on streaming viewership, the findings represent a meaningful shift in how launch success may be evaluated.
