Given how much of game development must ultimately go unused in order to ensure the quality of a team’s vision, it should come as no surprise that one of the biggest reveals of the State of the Union Panel at the Mysterium convention 2026 was a game idea that the team at Cyan chose not to pursue. This game was called “Project Anglerfish” in the presentation and was prefaced with a disclaimer that the footage revealed was not actively being worked on and would not reflect the final product of any game developed by the team.
Creative Director Eric Anderson and Developmental Director Hannah Gamiel introduce Project Anglerfish as a prototype for a game in the Myst universe that began development over a year ago. The team spent four months to put together that version of the prototype, showing off a publisher teaser in their segment on the project.
The teaser itself opens on the main character walking into a vast library. A figure at the desk asks for help in retrieving a valuable book that must remain closed to ensure the character’s safety. This is further hinted at as the scenery the character travels through periodically flashes between intact and collapsed. The figure’s words and demands grow harsher as he explains the dangers of the task, culminating in his rage as he discovers that he has not been brought the book. The reason for this seems to be tied to the book itself, as strange crystals begin forming as soon as it is opened and leading to it falling deep underground. The player character is finally tasked with returning to the Age in which the book is and retrieving it.
The developers also ensure fans that they are at work making games in the Myst universe. Whether that game has any ties to the teaser shown off during the event has not been stated, but comments from the Twitch stream and YouTube video indicate that fans are intrigued by the potential of Project Anglerfish.
