The last several days have been good for fans of Bethesda Games, with confirmation of planned upcoming titles such as Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas remasters, as well as a new Fallout project from Obsidian Studios (the same creators of New Vegas) and The Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced way back in 2018, over eight years ago (very few updates surrounding the game have been announced since then). In a recent interview with Windows Central, Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 will be utilizing a new version of the Creation Engine which has been used in previous Bethesda entries, the latest being Starfield which used Creation Engine 2.
Creation Engine 3 will be what’s running the newer Bethesda releases, although it is still being worked on, with Todd Howard stating, “A lot of people think engine, they think rendering, but there’s so much more that goes into it from a tool side and a system side”. This makes sense for an open-world game which is more demanding in terms of development and processing power for a computer or console, and as the technology advances, people expect more than the admittedly rigid character models and facial expressions of previous Bethesda Games, including Starfield.
When Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI are to be released is not certain, and any idea of when they’ll release is speculation, as Jason Schreier stating in an article in which interviewed Todd Howard that, “Bethesda didn’t share release windows for any of the projects, but the Obsidian game may help satiate fans before Fallout 5, which is expected to be years away”. Fortunately we have other Fallout media to keep people interested until then, such as the highly popular and well-received Fallout TV series being produced by Amazon. Said series has gone on to explore and expand upon many stories featured within the games, including that of Caesar’s Legion and the NCR from New Vegas.
