As we get closer to the end of the year, we are seeing more and more games delayed to 2027 due to a stacked upcoming release schedule. With the release of GTA 6, one of the biggest games of the decade, in November, many want to avoid releases close to the game’s release. Other reasons for delays this year include games needing more development time and developers realizing they need more time to release a finished product. In the current gaming landscape, it’s more important than ever to get it right the first time. And in the case of ONTOS, the new sci-fi horror game by Frictional Games, they need more development time, as it’s their biggest game yet. The game will now release in 2027, officially delayed from 2026.

ONTOS, the sci-fi horror game by Frictional Games, was first revealed during the 2025 Game Awards and dubbed the spiritual successor to the beloved horror game Soma. The game will take place on a moon inside a hotel and have you uncover a mystery that’s both horrifying and mind-bending. The game was set for a 2026 release, but in a tweet on X, they have officially delayed the game to 2027 as they need more time for development, which many are understanding, as they want the game to live up to its hype.

It always sucks to see a game you’re excited for get delayed, but when the developers come out and say they need more time, it’s for the best, as getting it right the first time is most important in the current climate. ONTOS is being developed by the dev team behind SOMA and Amnesia, so there’s a lot of hype surrounding the game. SOMA and Amnesia are legendary horror games, and the fact that it’s a spiritual successor to SOMA is extremely exciting. ONTOS is now set for a 2027 release with no exact date, but you can wishlist the game on your preferred platform now. If you’re a fan of horror, this is one to watch out for.
