The Steam Machine Companion Cube has been pulled offline, leaving many fans dissatisfied and upset. A reddit post made on June 29th from Dbrand, the company being the Companion Cube wrap, confirms this, and explains the situation alongside an apology. With the initial announcement of the Steam Machine on November 12th, 2025, a concept render of the Companion Cube from the Portal series was showcased on the same day. The Companion Cube was meant to be a wrap for the cube-shaped Steam Machine. But, Valve’s legal team made contact with Dbrand because of quite a blatant licensing issue that the company seemed to overlook.
The post goes into detail about the situation, explaining that Valve’s legal team reached out because Dbrand created the Companion Cube wrap without the actual license to do so. Dbrand was immediately asked to take down the product, as well as the launch film that came with it, and they complied and did exactly that. Afterwards, Dbrand attempted to make an appeal with Valve, and attempted to reach a compromise to try and keep the project alive after the time they spent on it. Valve simply said no, according to the post’s retelling of the events. Dbrand, throughout the post, took accountability for the situation, and explained that Valve was not in the wrong for reaching out and asking them to remove the product from shelves.
This news is unfortunate for the fans who were looking forward to the Companion Cube wrap, but the post from Dbrand at least assured that anyone who purchased the product would receive a full refund the same day the post was made. However, fans are wondering as to how or why an oversight of this degree was made. Many are wondering how or why Dbrand never requested the license to make the Companion Cube wrap in the first place. Regardless of how or why, Dbrand makes an official apology in their reddit post, to both fans and Valve.
