The action RPG Granblue Fantasy: Relink released back in February 2024. The game was met with acclaim from critics and fervor from fans, and, as of last year, the game had sold over two million copies. That was supposed to be it with no future plans for the game. However, that fan fervor and adoration lead to the developers at Cygames to want to continue the game somehow. This led to the development of the massive expansion Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok. At Summer Game Fest, we got to learn about and go hands on with the expansion as well as talk with Granblue’s creative director Tetsuya Fukuhara and the director of Endless Ragnarok Sanshiro Hidaka.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok was tackled by the developers as to provide one extensive package of content for the game as a pivot to live service and smaller updates didn’t seem like a realistic possibility. When talking to the directors, they said they wanted to add 100% of their ideas into the expansion, but jokingly said they ended up adding 200% of the ideas. The massive expansion is said to have 1.5x the content of the base game will double your playtime. It was said the expansion will take up to 20-30 hours if you rush through it, so expect it to take much longer if you take your time. You also can’t jump directly into Endless Ragnarok from any point in the base game. Players will first have to complete the “Tale of Bahamut’s Rage” questline before the expansion content unlocks.
The massive expansion is set to add new characters, story content, quests, as well as quality of life and balance updates to the base game. All that sounds tantalizing already, but the biggest additions are the new mechanics with summons and the Master Traits system. Like any RPG with summons, they have a massive impact on combat. You can equip up to four summons in your loadout, and these summons can be any of the creatures seen in the game. Once called upon, summons are player controlled (replacing the player character) and last a short amount of time. However, summons are invincible so you can go all out with them when you do use them.
The Master Trait system is the new progression system for characters. The thought process behind this system was to reinvigorate character builds and play styles so everyone isn’t always using the same characters and builds from the base game. The developers want players to experiment and try things out, and they do this by giving each character three styles to invest in with their Master Traits. You can focus down one style’s path or pinpoint specific abilities in each style to build to. Unfortunately, you aren’t able to unlock all traits for all styles. However, you are easily able to respec and try out different things if you don’t like a specific style.
Everything we learned about the expansion sounds like it’ll make players happy, and you could see the joy and enthusiasm on the directors’ faces when they talked about making it. Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is set to release next month on July 9, 2026.
