The character action type of game was once the pinnacle of the action genre. Nowadays, the mainstays of the genre are all but gone, and action games have moved more to being Soulslikes instead of character action. However, one studio is looking to keep the genre alive by full remaking their 2022 release Gungrave G.O.R.E in Unreal Engine 5 and is now known as Gungrave G.O.R.E Blood Heat. At Summer Game Fest, we got to go hands on with the remake and thoroughly enjoyed our time with it.

Gungrave G.O.R.E Blood Heat is a third person shooter character action game. While shooting is the main form of combat, you are also able to melee and parry enemies (even their bullets too).  The game isn’t as intense as a Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, but , what we played,the game just oozes with style. From strafing around shooting enemies to your melee combo ending in a massive shot that can hit multiple enemies at the same time, the game nails itself as breathing new life into the franchise that hadn’t seen a console release since the early 2000s. It feels like it a direct follow up to those in the best way possible as it feels like a modern game from that era instead of being overstuffed. Just straightforward character action shooting.

Using your dual pistols and fists aren’t all you can do either. Your character also has these flashy and stylish power moves to whip out and do incredible damage to enemies and bosses. There are even finishers you can enact on some enemies and bosses by using the triggers once their health is low enough. While the demo wasn’t too long, the developers said there are a plethora of updates to the original game for the remake for fans to discover.

Gungrave G.O.R.E Blood Heat has no release window at the moment.
