Ever since the concept of artificial intelligence has been purposed, humans have been fascinated by the concept of it turning against us. That conflict has given rise to countless stories across many mediums, and video games are no different. The latest in this exploration of robots turning against their creators is Ghostless, a 2D action game where the robots can take the form of humans to trick the player. Developed by Coffeenauts, the game received its reveal trailer earlier today, showing off some gameplay and the general premise.
Set in an alternate reality were an AI superintelligence declared war on humanity following the Cold War, Ghostless sees the player take on a mission to destroy the rumored AI weapon that has been in development. According to the game’s Steam page, after they get stranded in the facility, players will be forced to gather allies from the locals as they explore the ruined city. All the while, robots will not only be attacking the player but will also be posing as potential allies to try to trick them.
The trailer offers further insight into the story, personifying the enemy AI by introducing a resentful voice hounding the player as they fight and explore. It also shows off some of the camp-building features the game provides. As more and more people join the resistance, players will be able to expand their base with different facilities that can upgrade their abilities. The gameplay ends with an ominous message, encouraging players to “find out what it means to be human.”
Human versus AI stories continue to be extremely popular even in the modern day, and with each iteration on the idea they only grow more flexible. The threats shown off so far in Ghostless promise mechanical adversaries that can challenge players, physically, psychologically, and philosophically. The game will release on console and PC, though no release date has been announced yet.
