After rumors and some confirmation from Activision themselves, the announcement trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 dropped on May 28th. The trailer begins in South Korea, where we saw a squad of South Korean troops alongside one American infantryman engaged in a casual patrol through city streets, stopping at a convenience store where we get a glimpse at what appears to be one of the antagonists, the “new Supreme Leader of North Korea”. Shortly afterwards, we see the city bombarded, as North Korean forces launch an attack on South Korea. The Korean storyline is said to be split between two perspectives, that of South Korean Private Park, played by Young Mazino, who some may recognize from HBO’s The Last of Us, and an unnamed North Korean soldier who we do not have any other information about as of now. While a fresh start for both Call of Duty as a franchise and Modern Warfare as a series, some have remarked that this setting may invoke controversy, with South Korean journalist Hyeonju Song quoted in a Guardian article saying, “Since the Korean war is a conflict that has not yet ended, I personally believe that creating fiction based on it is bound to cause pain to someone”.
Meanwhile, we’ll also be following the continued story of Captain Price after the events of Modern Warfare III (2023), who is on the run and appears to be working alongside Valeria, the Las Almas Cartel leader first seen in Modern Warfare II (2022)- we also get a scene of a showdown between Ghost and Price, indicating Ghost may be on the hunt for his former Task Force 141 teammate. Outside of North and South Korea, other locations confirmed for the game include New York, Paris, and Mumbai.
Details about the multiplayer have also emerged, with twelve 6v6 maps launching with the game, all spread across the globe and offering a variety of locations. Other game modes arriving include Gunfight, “Big War” which will include vehicular combat, DMZ which is returnign from Modern Warfare II (2022), and Kill Block, the latter being rather new for Call of Duty, which is built around a map that contains different sections which alternate and change across rounds and matches. According to Infinity Ward, there are over 500 possible configurations, which is sure to keep things interesting with each playthrough.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch October 23rd, 2026, and will appear on PC, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and for the first time on Nintendo Switch.
