Becoming an independent developer is a daunting task for many people with an idea for a video game, naturally leading to many tutorials and tips for how to get into and master the process. While these are very helpful from a mechanical perspective, they are not intended to place the viewer in the mind of a video game developer the way that many of the videos of Goodgis, developer of Dewdrop Dynasty, are. For five years, the creator has kept a careful catalog over their experience and struggles while they worked through the various stages of work associated with something as big as making a game. Now, many of the channel’s viewers are happy to see that the game has an official trailer and release date.
The trailer begins with the player character, a small pixel bee, falling face first into the Underland. From there, they make their way through various biomes complete with plants, weather, and houses which include NPCs for the player to interact with. One of the game’s core mechanics, gun-jumping, is shown in action, letting the player propel themself to greater height during platforming segments.
The second half of the trailer shows off some of the bosses players can expect to fight, including an agile warrior, a winding dragon, and a skull with massive hands. Collecting tickets unlocks vending machines that can be used to earn rewards such as new abilities. Much like the gun-jump these abilities are shown being used for both combat and movement. According to the game’s Steam page, players will also be able to use items that they find along the way.
While some players find that explaining the process behind creating something ruins some of its intrigue, the process allows others to grow more attached to the game before its release. With almost all of the mechanics shown off in the trailer having some spotlight in a video, all that is left for Dewdrop Dynasty is to catalogue its release on July 21st.
