Publisher SUNSOFT and developer Wit One have announced that ROUTE-16R will release on August 6, 2026 for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. ROUTE-16R is the first new entry in the Route-16 series in over 40 years. The Route-16 series originally launched as an arcade game in 1981, with an enhanced Famicom version titled Route-16 Turbo released in 1985.
Players control the MAD X-R, collecting money throughout each stage while avoiding the Kanharoo Gang’s cars and monsters. The game features two perspectives that can be toggled mid-stage. Maze Mode focuses on a single maze with its traps and obstacles, while Radar Mode shows the full stage of 16 mazes at once. Players can switch between modern visuals and the original 1980s art style at any time during a stage.
Several mechanics are new to the series. Upon contact with an enemy, the MAD X-R now shifts into a robot form and a battle begins. The result is determined by the vehicle’s stats and SP items collected during the stage. Money collected can be used between stages to purchase upgrades for top speed, turbo fuel capacity, and robot combat strength. Collecting every item in a stage no longer clears it. Obtaining the final item now summons a boss from the Kanharoo Gang that must be defeated to end the stage. ROUTE-16R also includes the series’ first multiplayer mode, a four-player local mini-game in which players compete to seize a flag. Online play is not available.
Alongside ROUTE-16R, SUNSOFT is releasing both classic titles digitally on the same day. Route-16 will launch on Nintendo Switch, and Route-16 Turbo will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. A Nintendo Switch exclusive Route-16 Collection containing all three titles is planned for Japan. A Collector’s Box edition featuring a gold replica Route-16 Turbo cartridge and an acrylic stand is also available.
ROUTE-16R is available to wishlist now on Steam, with additional information on their website.
