Spiders is a subsidiary studio of Nacon. It’s a Parisian studio that has developed various action-RPGs, such as Steelrising and Greedfall, and is now facing a shutdown. Nacon, the parent company, put Spiders up for sale back in March, with bidding open until April 14, but no bites. Now the studio faces liquidation as the court-appointed administrator will file for liquidation to the commercial court on Wednesday, with many close to the case calling it “mere formality at this stage.”
Spiders is an AA European studio that hit the scene back in 2008 and caught fire with their ambitious action-RPGs that seemed beyond their league. They were responsible for games such as Technomancer and Mars War Logs. It wasn’t until 2019, when they released Greedfall, that the studio became one of the biggest in the European AA scene. They were first bought by Bigben Interactive, but later sold to Nacon. But now, due to financial instability across all of Nacon’s organization, they are facing a shutdown, as Nacon filed for emergency insolvency for various divisions and has failed to sell the studio. The studio reportedly has 70 employees, and these employees have spent the last few days working on resumes and preparing for life after Spider.
Spiders is a studio that has been around for 18 years, but now, due to poor financial decisions by its parent company, its 18-year run comes to an end. It sucks that this shutdown comes only six weeks after the release of Greedfall 2, and that they were also working on a new title to secure their future, but in the end, it wasn’t enough, and now they are being sunsetted. It’s been a rough year for gaming, as another studio has entered the list of studio shutdowns. As things are going, many more may join the list as the gaming industry continues to struggle. So, unless something changes, more games and studios will suffer and meet their end, like this 18-year-old studio, Spiders.
