Yesterday saw the release of the official PS5 features trailer for the upcoming Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss game, which includes haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos support; these features are meant to offer a more immersive experience and engross the player in the horror they come across throughout the game. This also goes hand-in-hand with the investigative tools players will have available in the game, which should surely enhance the traditional Lovecraftian experience of people going mad searching for hidden knowledge.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is one of many attempts at capturing Lovecraft’s most famous character in a video game format, something which has been tried many times before to mixed results. From Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth to The Sinking City, we’ve seen many tries at depicting the mind-bending cosmic horror that, while more easily detailed in words, is harder to express visually due to the indescribable and maddening horror of the beings and experiences encountered in such fiction.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss will follow Noah, a man sent to investigate the disappearance of miners within a Pacific Ocean rig in the year 2053, where Earth’s resources are dwindling and corporations scramble to the oceans in search of solutions. Little do they know what lies beneath the deep, including the ancient sprawling city of R’lyeh which the player will explore across the game. Noah will be accompanied by an AI companion known as Key, an interesting choice that puts our faith in our technology up against unimaginable beings and nightmares beneath the sea. The more Noah and Key venture into R’lyeh, the closer they come to a secret that has the potential to break their understanding of reality itself, and drive them to the brink of madness. For any longtime Cthulhu fans out there, it’s best to keep your eyes peeled for new announcements with this game, as it’s sure to satisfy that Lovecraftian itch many gamers have had for some time.
