Marathon, the newest extraction shooter to hit the market on March 5, 2026, developed by renowned game studio Bungie, which is responsible for two of the biggest shooting titles, Halo and Destiny, has officially sold 1.2 million copies across gaming platforms: Steam, PS5, and Xbox. Ultimately, grossing $55 million in revenue across the platforms, with Steam leading the charge with 70% of the player base, PS5 with 19%, and Xbox with 11%, according to Alinea Analytics. Even with these impressive numbers, unfortunately, Marathon seems to fall short of its competitors and is struggling a bit as of now. Still, it has seemed to have garnered a dedicated fanbase that supports it. It’s only a matter of time before the game evens out and goes on to succeed.

Marathon, unfortunately, has fallen behind Arc Raiders, the new extraction shooter released back in October 2025. Before release, both games had a server-slam, allowing players to try out the game and see if they would like to purchase it, and both saw an increase in purchases. Arc Raiders doubled its sales, with an 80% increase, while Marathon saw only a 49% increase. There’s a lot to consider about why Arc Raiders saw an initial boom while Marathon didn’t, and a lot of it has to do with first impressions. Arc Raiders is a lot more beginner-friendly and easy to pick up, while Marathon, as reported by many, seems to be catered to the hardcore player base and has a beginning that weeds out those who can’t give their all.

Marathon has had a bumpy road to release, and some of that may be why not many wanted to try it. Such as art plagiarism in 2025 and the game’s delay, which worried and turned off players. But now, a couple of weeks after its launch, Marathon has managed to build a dedicated fanbase that supports it, so the game is finding success and will only continue to grow. It will not be going anywhere anytime soon.
