Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise and, for what has become a yearly tradition, there was a Pokémon Presents event to share updates on the franchise to celebrate Pokémon Day. In the short thirty minute presentation, they unveiled a slew of updates ranging from minor things for games already out to ending on the biggest thing with the official reveal of the Generation 10 mainline games Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves.
While many details on the new games leaked a couple months ago, seeing Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves in action, sans moment to moment gameplay, shows that it looks to be a big step up from anything we’ve had prior in any mainline Pokémon game. The, short trailer showed an island setting, some fancily dressed Pikachus, and, the most important, the three new starter Pokémon that players will get to choose from to start their next journey. The biggest surprise regarding the new games was that they won’t be coming this year as the trailer ended with a nebulous 2027 release window as well as mentioning that the games will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Elsewhere in the presentation, the show started with the reveal of something truly unique. Dubbed the Game Music Collection, it is a music player that looks like an original Game Boy and features 45 swappable cartridges so fans can listen to the music of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green with as close to their original Game Boy sounding quality. The Game Music Collection is available starting today.
Then, they talked a little about the Pokémon World Championships and the PokémonXP fan event which take place in San Fransisco in August of this year. Speaking of the competitive scene of Pokémon, they unveiled that there would be a celebratory 30th anniversary set for the TCG this year which will have the first simultaneous worldwide release for the TCG in its history. Then, we got a release window for Pokémon Champions which is what competitive scene will switch to from the mainline games this year. The game is set to release on Nintendo Switch this April and will come to mobile devices later this year. The game will also be able to connect with Pokémon Home and bring Pokémon the recently released Pokémon Legends Z-A later this year as well.
Other gaming updates included the Mystery Gift distribution of the Garchompite Z mega stone in Pokémon Legends Z-A starting today. The recently announced Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen ports are out today and will feature Pokémon Home support. The 2005 GameCube RPG Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness will be coming to the Nintendo Switch online service at some point. Pokémon Unite will see the legendary birds of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres appear in the game. The mobile game Pokémon Masters EX will see the original games’ protagonist Red appear in a new way, dubbed Red (1996), as he looks like his original character art from those games. Finally, we also got a few more details on the upcoming cozy life sim Pokémon Pokopia which showed off the game’s 4 player co-op mode as well as showing off the cooking aspect of the game.
