Dispatch is the latest choose-your-own-adventure story game by the creative minds behind Telltale Games, who have since moved on to become AdHoc Studio in the wake of Telltale’s closure in 2018. First unveiled at the 2024 Game Awards, Dispatch is a workplace comedy that sees the player take on the role of the former superhero Mecha Man, who’s been demoted to the role of a mere dispatcher. In a game where choices matter, the stakes couldn’t be set higher as you are left with the responsibility of managing and dispatching a dysfunctional team of heroes to emergencies throughout the city.
Fan anticipation for Dispatch upon its initial reveal was high, as the visuals, character designs, and voice actor casting shown off looked and sounded incredible even that early in the game’s development. As time went on with little word from the developers post initial reveal, many fans likely moved on and ended up gradually forgetting about the exciting new Telltale-like game on the horizon. As of this past September 17, however, with the release of Dispatch’s latest release date announcement trailer, it is safe to say that fan excitement has been reignited. As Dispatch is a cinematic choose-your-own-adventure, the trailer is largely made up of cutscene footage, with a few scenes showing off dialogue choices reinforcing the narrative-driven nature of the kind of game that Dispatch is. Bits and pieces of gameplay footage are mixed in with the cinematic shots, showing the hero dispatching side of the game that has more or less gone unexplained, giving fans an idea of how Dispatch’s decision-making system will look and feel.
Dispatch releases for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam on October 22, but if you can’t seem to wait any longer to try the game out for yourself, a free-to-play demo was released for PC players on Steam only this past June.
