NetEase’s Marvel Rivals has had a pretty explosive past few months. Releasing in December to massive numbers across all platforms and not really showing any signs of stopping, Marvel Rivals is now the premier character shooter on the market. Part of that is the popular (though admittedly waning) Marvel IP lending their characters to the game, but another part would be the gameplay and the unique things it brings to the table, including the unique Team Up mechanic that encourages certain character combinations, and it seems we’re getting more of them once Season 2 starts.

I fully recommend you read the PCGamer article to get the full context of how the NetEase developers are moving forward with their plans for Marvel Rivals in the future. Right now, several Team Ups are able to take some arguably weaker characters and uplift them a couple of tiers. Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, is a top tier Strategist whose Team Up with the rest of the Fantastic Four makes them much, much more durable and viable against competent teams. Other Team Ups were so powerful they took an okay character and a mediocre character in Hulk and Iron Man respectively and turned them into absolute house cleaners, to the point where the Team Up was actually nerfed.
Team Ups are a fantastic way to engage players in the character select, and they’re also fun and flavorful interactions between the cast, with some comic references being the basis of the Team Up or even some game original interactions. As stated with the Iron Man/Hulk Team Up, they aren’t exactly balanced, but balance has always been a bit of a secondary concern to fun when it comes to Rivals. With new characters on the way in the form of Blade and some leaks such as Ultron and Emma Frost, we’re definitely on the way to having more new characters and more new Team Ups. It’s good to see Marvel Rivals really developing and pushing forward.
