Earlier this month, a new report went through what’s next for WB Games following their rough 2024. Now, WB Games has made some moves; unfortunately, it’s not what anyone wants and adds to the slaughter that the video game industry has gone through over the past few years. The Wonder Woman game in development from Monolith Productions is canceled. On top of that, Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego have been shut down.
STORY: Warner Bros. Games is shutting down three studios, including Monolith Productions, and cancelling the Wonder Woman game. “The quality of too many of our new releases has really missed the mark.”

Warner Bros. confirmed the news in a statement to Kotaku. “We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises – Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.
Monolith Productions revealed the Wonder Woman game back in 2021 but according to people familiar with the project, the game has struggled to coalesce. The report earlier this month revealed that the game was rebooted early last year and switched directors. According to people who asked not to be identified, the game had already cost the company more than $100 million and was still years away from release. Monolith Productions worked on several titles since its founding back in 1994. Some of the most notable include Gotham City Imposters, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Middle earth: Shadow of War.
“The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward,” Warner Bros. said. “Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within bur strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games.”
First Player Games was the developer of MultiVersus, the live-service multiplayer brawler in the vein of Super Smash Bros. featuring different IPs within Warner Bros. Discovery’s catalog such as DC, Game of Thrones, Space Jam, Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, and more. The developers recently announced that the game’s final update, Season 5, will be its last. The game will go offline on May 30. The game will remain playable offline, both locally and against AI opponents. Real money transactions for the game have ceased. Players who want to keep playing can download the game prior to May 30 at 9:00 am PDT. Afterward, the game will no longer be available to download.
Warner Bros. Games San Diego was a mobile-focused studio.
“We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions,” Warner Bros. said. “As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world-class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.”
