Indie game studio Moon Beast Productions has raised $4.5 million in seed funding to support its mission of redefining the Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG) genre. The funding round was led by 1 AM Gaming, with additional investments from prominent backers such as 1UP Ventures, The Mini Fund, Overwolf, and Versus Ventures. A network of angel investors, including Gaingels, renowned streamer Cohh Carnage, and Zynga co-founder Mark Pincus, also contributed to the round.
Founded in 2021 and formally introduced in 2022, Moon Beast Productions was established by veteran game developers Phil Shenk, Peter Hu, and Erich Schaefer, best known for their work on Diablo and Diablo II at Blizzard Entertainment. The San Francisco-based studio plans to use the funding to expand its team and finance its debut game, described as an “innovative ARPG that challenges conventional design paradigms.” Despite the growth plans, the studio emphasized maintaining a “lean, focused approach” to game development, ensuring efficiency and agility in its processes.
In a press release, Peter Hu, president and co-founder of Moon Beast, highlighted the significance of securing funding in a competitive environment. “In today’s challenging funding landscape, we’re incredibly fortunate to have investors who understand our vision,” Hu said. “Our approach has always been about working smarter, not just harder. We’re building reusable, data-driven systems that allow us to iterate rapidly and create more with less.”
Moon Beast’s CEO, Phil Shenk, expressed the studio’s ambition to reinvent the ARPG experience by focusing on player freedom and replayability. “We want to expand the possibilities of what players can expect from ARPGs,” Shenk stated. The team aims to challenge traditional design norms by integrating groundbreaking ideas into their debut title.
Moon Beast’s chief creative officer, Erich Schaefer, elaborated on the studio’s goals to create dynamic, open worlds and empower players with robust user-generated content tools. “We’re leveraging the latest technology to make more open, dynamic worlds,” Schaefer explained. “This includes in-game tools that allow players to create entirely new game modes, extending the life and creativity of the experience.”
Schaefer also emphasized the team’s desire to draw inspiration from past successes while exploring innovative directions. “We finally have the technological capabilities and decades of design experience to bring those visions to life,” he added. “We’re going back to what made those early Diablo games feel so awesome but taking them in some cool, fresh directions.”
With this substantial funding, Moon Beast Productions is positioned to push the boundaries of the ARPG genre and deliver a game that resonates with players while challenging established norms. The studio’s commitment to blending innovation with decades of expertise sets the stage for an ambitious and exciting debut project.
