Game Informer, the longest-running gaming magazine in the U.S. since 1991, has been shut down after 33 years of coverage on the video game industry with cover stories, reviews, previews, news, deep dives, and exclusive interviews on the biggest games coming out during the year. Following its closure, the magazine’s latest issue 367 with Dragon Age: The Veilguard as the cover story is the last.

The following statement was released sharing the news:
“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer.”
“From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on.
Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.”
Sources tell Kotaku that no one on the team wrote the statement. The team was making sure everyone on staff was informed about the news.
The Game Informer staff at the magazine which also publishes a website, weekly podcast, and online video documentaries about game studios and developers, were all called into a meeting on Friday with parent company GameStop’s VP of HR. During the meeting, they were told that the publication was closing immediately, they were all laid off, and would begin severance terms. At least one staff member was in the middle of a work trip when the team was told.
Following the news, current and former Game Informer staff members took to social media to share their thoughts and reactions.
Much love to the GI team members past and present. It was legendary. ❤️

Hey, I’m out of a job! Currently processing all that and will have more to say later, but I’ll be looking for a new gig soon! https://t.co/93XbL4632b

A very abrupt end to the coolest job I ever had. Really tough to process. https://t.co/hvQaHRVde0

I love you all so much. Thank you for reading our work over the last 33 years. I didn’t know this would be my Friday when I woke up this morning. My heart is broken. https://t.co/J4YIYqSKbP

Love everyone so much. I don’t have any words this morning. https://t.co/0IEhSaC1vk

I will forever be proud of my decade of work there and grateful that I got to be part of its legacy. In the short term, I am sure you will catch me more over at @MinnMaxShow, and for the long term… I am looking for work!

Today’s my second time being laid off from Game Informer. Last time, I was still able to look forward to new issues at least.
I am devastated, for myself, for all of the amazing people that worked here, for all the writers who wanted to write for GI.
GI forever💔 https://t.co/IH6xdSbsPr

Welp.

This is the worst fucking timeline and fuck GameStop. The industry is worse off without GI and that stupid piece of shit company that’s been flying by its pants off meme stocks couldn’t stand to see a part of it be successful without their direct intervention. https://t.co/hjEP4249jy

I’m incredibly lucky that I had the chance to work at Game Informer for the time that I did; but I didn’t know that fast forward 5 years later, the magazine would disappear entirely. Heartbreaking doesn’t even begin to explain this, but it’s worse for the people laid off today.…

There are really no words. Sigh. 💔 https://t.co/nUvnCNcrBa

This is the worst. GI was a special place filled with special people. Many of them would dramatically improve your gaming company, so scoop them up! Their skills and understanding of the industry make them ideal fits for brand, marketing, research, and comms positions https://t.co/QHsV4HcbId

You fired the few remaining editors who were working their asses off to provide any value or credibility to your sinking, rudderless ship, and then replaced decades of their content and gaming history with a farewell message you copied off of ChatGPT. Absolute TRASH. 🔥🖕🔥

Heartbroken and angry. Most of my adult life was spent at Game Informer. All day, I’ve been remembering amazing moments I had with the team – some of the most talented and kindhearted people I’ve ever met and was lucky enough to work with. End of an era, but GI forever!

I’m furious about the end of Game Informer. It was an incredible 33-year run and then GameStop pumps out this phony/empty farewell message. I’d bet money it was written by AI.
Fuck you, GameStop and a huge fuck you to Ryan Cohen. https://t.co/XeTY5HoxNV
