While some find April Fool’s Day to be either immensely annoying, others are able to shrug in the face of danger. Video game developers are known to show everyone a good time, however, usually producing content that is inoffensive and fan friendly. Blizzard is usually known as commanders of the ever poignant April Fool’s pranks (this year it was a Hearthstone trailer and Starcraft race that sealed the deal), however it looks like Poland based, award winning developers CD Projekt Red took the jester hatted crown this year with their fake out DLC pack featuring everyone’s favorite horse, Roach.
If you’ve ever spent a decent amount of gameplay in the Witcher 3, you know that title character Geralt has a stead that is a little less than faithful. While Roach is well loved among fans, he has a massive reputation as glitchaurus rex. It’s gratifying and also just plain old neat to see developers be self aware and admit their mistakes, while also laughing at themselves, as well as alongside their fans. Everyone makes mistakes!
CD Projekt Red published the fun prank video via Youtube, and was quote describing it as:
A horse is a horse is a horse, of course.
Roach is the name of Geralt’s horses, each and every one in turn.
Not sure why he calls ‘em all that. Lazy? Doesn’t get attached? To animals?
Might be because one day he caught a roach, which is a common fresh-water fish. A big one.
Decided he’d celebrate by naming his horse after it.
We considered a bunch of options, but Doobie and Spliff seemed off-lore.
Have CD Projekt Red usurped Blizzard as Best in April Fool’s Show? It was certainly an unforgettable day for gaming fans!
