Good news everyone!
The show that ran out of episodes has a new home in a licensed video game called Futurama: Game Of Drones. The game was made in a collaboration between Fox Digital Entertainment and the game’s developer Wooga and is set to release next week on February 25th.
GameSpot reports, that Game of Drones will be a match-4 puzzle game that will release concurrently for iOS and Android. While the game is free to download, it will include microtransactions. Aside from the puzzle aspect of the game, players will be able to explore 3D world maps from behind the wheel of the Planet Express ship.
We always try to do topical humor and stories that were relevant on Futurama, even though the show takes place a thousand years in the future.
– Patric M. Verrone
Producer and Writer for Futurama
According to the GameSpot article, the game will feature all of your favorite characters and their fight in a “desperately imbalanced trade war against longtime shipping rival MomCo.”
Just because this game is a match-4 that doesn’t mean it’s slacking in the writing department. The game’s story was written by Dave Grossman of Secret of Monkey Island and The Wolf Among Us fame, Jonathon Myers who wrote Game of Thrones: Ascent and Patric M. Verrone who is a long time writer for the series. Just like the show, the game will feature the off-beat humor and quips that fans expect from the series.
This won’t be Futurama‘s first venture into video games, back in 2003 Unique Development Studios made a surprisingly competent platformer for Xbox, PS2, and GameCube. The game set the Planet Express crew against the evil Mom, similar to Game of Drones.
Much like licensed video games in the early 2000’s, it’s very rare to find a licensed mobile game that is any good and Futurama: Game of Drones being a match-4 game doesn’t help it either. However this game does have some serious writing chops, hopefully the game will garner enough interest in the property to bring it back to television.
