In 2022, Zach Cregger had his solo screen directorial and writing debut with his horror film Barbarian. Now, the hit movie will have a video game adaptation created by the studio Diversion3 Entertainment, who was also behind fellow movie-to-games Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game.
Barbarian was released in 2022. The film tells the story of a woman who arrives at a rental house only to find it double-booked by a man who arrived beforehand, unaware of the dark secret that lurks within the home. Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long, Barbarian was well-received by critics, as well as grossing $45.4 million in the box office against a $4.5 million budget.
Diversion3 Entertainment’s Executive Producer Tim Hesse expressed the company’s delight in getting to work with the movie in a statement with Bloody Disgusting:
“We’re very excited to work with the team at New Regency to expand on the settings, characters, and creatures of Barbarian,” Hesse said, “The film did a magnificent job of not only scaring audiences with its unexpected and horrifying twists and turns, but also in establishing strong characters thrown into terrifying situations. We look forward to exploring these themes further in the game.”
Yariv Milchan, chairman and CEO of New Regency Pictures, who produced the original film, added to Hesse’s excitement:
“Expanding the Barbarian universe into gaming provides a new way to capture the horror that made the film such a success. We’re thrilled to collaborate with the incredibly talented team at Diversion3 Entertainment to immerse new and existing fans in this world.”
It is currently unknown when the game will be released, or what genre it will be. Although Diversion3 specializes in asymmetrical horror games, as seen with their work for the Friday the 13th and Evil Dead franchises, there is still a possibility of them venturing into another horror game genre for Barbarian. Hopefully, more updates will soon follow.
