Shadowgate, one of the most well-known and beloved point-and-click adventure games of all time is getting a sequel 30+ years later, Beyond Shadowgate. The game is being developed by one of the original designers of the first game David Marsh and Zojoi, a leading 8-bit adventure studio. In addition, they announced a small Kickstarter for the game that lets players gain access to the first 18 rooms of the game. Supporters will also get their hands on several unique swag items. The Kickstarter goes live on February 18, 2023.
In Beyond Shadowgate, 35 years have passed since Jair defeated the Warlock Lord in the caverns beneath the living castle, Shadowgate. During this period, the land of Kal Torlin prospered while the events of Shadowgate have been forgotten. But, evil starts stirring, scheming to bring the world to ruin. In the dungeons of Gwynenthell, the capital city of Kal Torlin, a lowly Fenling by the name of Del Thornburrow awaits his fate. No stranger to a jail cell, Del soon frees himself from the dangers of the dungeon, only to begin a journey that will push him to the edge of his limits. Lead Del as he travels through Gwynenthell, across the Torlin Forest, over the Gatekeeper Mountains, and beyond! Uncover plots to overthrow kingdoms that threaten to plunge the land into darkness! Interact with old friends and new, while protecting Del from the traps, hazards, monsters, and every other peril that may introduce him to the ever-present Grim Reaper.
“Beyond Shadowgate is designed with that retro style with modern conveniences,” Marsh said. “It’s four times larger than the original Shadowgate. It’s got more rooms, more puzzles, more NPCs, more deaths, lots and lots of death.”
The swag items supporters can get are a part of the different editions they can choose from. The Collector’s Edition includes a glow-in-the-dark cartridge. The Standard Edition comes with a gray cartridge with a box, manual, and dust sleeve. There is also a 35th-anniversary commemorative Collector’s box, an 8-bit microfiber cloth map of Kal Torin, and a Shadowgate Collector’s coin.
