It has been revealed that EA Originals is departing from their usual method of collaborating with independent developers to work with Koei Tecmo on a new project. What we know so far is that the game will be set in “fantasy feudal Japan” with one piece of concept art presenting a temple surrounded by an overgrown cherry blossom tree. As of now, it carries the title of “the next great hunting game” since an official name has yet to be announced.

Electronic Arts launched EA Originals back in 2016 with the intention of supporting small developers and helping them make the most of their games. This has allowed independent studios such as Coldwood Interactive and Hazelight Studios to receive attention with games like Unravel and It Takes Two. The official EA website states that the Originals division seeks out “brave developers with bold artistic vision” so they could reach a wider audience while enjoying creative freedom.
Koei Tecmo is a video game company that needs no introduction. They have been around since 2009 and have created the Dead or Alive and Dynasty Warriors series. A partnership with EA Originals is not necessary for publicity, but it does provide better funding and support to develop an AAA game.
Executive Vice President of Koei Tecmo Yosuke Hayashi has expressed his gratitude to EA Originals in a recent statement. “It’s an honor to be partnering with EA Originals and to have the support of a team with such an incredible track record of releasing groundbreaking new games. The EA team fully embraces our creative independence and have become invaluable partners offering both development and publishing support.”
Some speculate that this upcoming hunting game will serve as a competitor to Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, but EA Originals and Koei Tecmo have not shared much information yet. More details will be announced later this month.
